There is no way that your books are moving - they are held by the weight of Africa's largest mammal. The bookends are carved from a solid piece of soapstone from the Kisii region of Kenya. The fair trade artisans who carve the bookends also dye them to add contrast to the bookends. The Kisii people were among those who were pushed out of Kenya by other Rift Valley communities in the early 1990s. Those who were able to stay have faced declining health conditions, worsening environmental conditions and land dispossession. By supporting Kisii craftspeople and artisans, like those who created these bookends, you are helping to empower a people and support their traditions. Thanks for helping us create a world of good!

If you combined the work of Raymond Loewy, I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, the result might very well look like the Platner Collection (1966). Warren Platner worked with all three of the industrial and organic design giants before turning his attention to steel wire furniture, for which he devised the structure and production method. Requiring as many as 1,000 welds and crafted out of wire and space, the Dining Table demonstrates Platner's belief that there is room in modernism "for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV." Constructed of metal components that are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating, the table features a clear plastic extrusion ring surrounding the base to protect floors and ensure a level tabletop. The tabletop is made of .4" thick tempered glass. The Platner Collection is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.

Brazilian Maurício Klabin designed the Eclipse Lamp in 1982 as part of a series of objects he called "cocoons," due to their rounded form, internal volumes and capacity to change. With the same kind of coiled delicacy you find in a soft-shelled nautilus, the Eclipse is a model of simplicity and ingenuity. Fabricated from a single strip of polypropylene attached to a steel frame, the Eclipse can be opened or closed to varying degrees. This allows the shape of the fixture to be altered to expand or reduce the amount of direct light or change the angle of illumination. Assembly required. Bulb (not included): Incandescent 60W/120V/ E26/A19-2PK.
Oh I am a sucker for houndstooth!
Awarded first prize at the 1951 Milan Triennial.
A terrific example of sensual modern, the Lady Chair (1951) came about when Arflex, a division of Pirelli, wanted to design seating with foam rubber upholstery, and commissioned Marco Zanuso. The Italian designer was already helping to shape the ideals of the modern design movement by having his work featured in the 1948 Low-Cost Furniture competition sponsored by the MoMA. Through his work with Arflex, he became an even greater influence with the introduction of his Lady Chair. Awarded first prize at the 1951 Milan Triennial, the Lady Chair was a triumph for the new material, latex foam. With which, Zanuso wrote, "one could revolutionize not only the system of upholstery but also the structural manufacturing and formal potential." The Lady Chair had contours never before seen in a chair, with the potential for production with industrial standards and market accessibility previously unimaginable. Today, Arflex still manufactures this nicely scaled, comfortable chair. Made in Italy.
I love the idea of a sleep sofa - there is something really endearing about cuddling up with my family in the living room on a big, wide, comfy couch!
Busk & Hertzog
The Vega Collection (2005) provides a unique solution for environments used for socializing, lounging and sleeping. Created by designers Busk & Hertzog, Vega consists of a multifunctional Sofa, Chaise and Ottoman. When a larger Sofa is needed, the Chaise and Ottoman are ready to oblige; slide the pieces together to create the required size. Should a sectional be in order, three or more pieces can be quickly combined. For further flexibility, the arm of the sofa can be positioned on either side and changed on a whim. The Sofa and Chaise transform into comfortable sleepers by sliding the seats - which rest on metal bases with internal tracks - and folding down the backs. Use a flat sheet for best fit. Two down pillows are included with the Sofa and one with the Chaise. Made in Denmark.
Coolest bar stool ever!
From Design within Reach (dwr.com):
Shin and Tomoko Azumi
Height adjustable for bars or counters with full 360° swivel.
Named Product of the Year at the International Interior Design Awards in 2000, Shin and Tomoko Azumi's LEM Piston Stool reveals rigorous and original rethinking of the form and function of seating. The LEM Piston Stool's sculptural leather, stainless steel or beech wood seat not only swivels, but also adjusts easily from a counter height (26.5") to a bar height (31") with a lever that activates a gas cylinder. While utility strongly determines the form of this unique stool, it also has a visual lightness that creates the illusion of freedom from gravity. The Azumi Design Studio has brought innovation to a range of products, running the gamut from sub woofer speakers to salt and pepper dispensers, combining fine craftsmanship with an adventurous grasp on the avant garde. The LEM Piston Stool is a contract-quality seat suited to both commercial and residential environments. Made in Italy.
ok so here it goes. I'm decorating my bedroom and bathroom up at UCF and i need help. I'm decorating my bathroom with black and white walls and i need some cool art work to give it a old school hollywood/pin up/ rock and roll kinda feel. Natural fiber jute rugs are a fresh change of pace from traditional floor coverings and the craftsmanship today is excellent. Here, a smooth, tight boucle weave in a beautiful teal floral print creates an appealing casual look. Jute's natural durability works well in high-traffic areas, too. Rug pad recommended. 5'x8'.
