The fair trade artisans who carve the bookends also dye them to add contrast to the bookends. The Kisii people were among those who were pushed out of Kenya by other Rift Valley communities in the early 1990s. Those who were able to stay have faced declining health conditions, worsening environmental conditions and land dispossession.
